Gothic Fashion in the Czech Lands in the 14th Century. Development of Clothing Features in the Czech Lands in the Years 1330 -1410

1 ABSTRACT This thesis presents a study of a field of everyday culture - medieval fashion and its development during the reign of Charles IV of Luxembourg and his son Wenceslas in the Czech lands in the years 1330 - 1410. As these fashion trends and changes were exhibited primarily through the clothing of nobility, this thesis focuses exclusively on the environs of the aristocracy and royal court. In addition to written sources and archaeological finds, the fine arts also serve to advance our knowledge of Gothic fashion trends, whose works authentically capture the contemporary clothing styles and changes in all of Europe. This thesis therefore examines, through a methodical analysis, how wall paintings, panel paintings and book illuminations of Czech provenance reflect changes in clothing fashions and tastes in courtly environs during the period of time known as Luxembourg Gothic. This study of primary iconographic sources in authentic historical buildings and galleries was further aided by the creation of an extensive photo archive. Last plague epidemic in the Czech lands, especially in Prague (1713-1714)

The main part of the thesis mentions last plague epidemic wave, that hit our country in the years 1713-1714, here I focus specifically on the city of Prague. The Czech lands, Moravia and Silesia are mentioned only briefly to show little differences between lands and their plague rules. I also describe medical facilities and hospitals, where were sick and dying people placed, and personnel which took care of these people. Divine services were important for people at that time, society was very religious and people thought that plague is a divine punishment. Even though society was very religiously based, cities and streets were filthy and full of mud.People in cities had very poor hygienic standards and habits, that helped to faster spreading of the disease. At last, places of final rest for terminally ill people, plague cemeteries are mentioned.

Czech Gothic art and its importance for human development

This bachelor thesis describes fine Arts in the czech lands during the gothic period. It represents the evolution of this art and to point out the possible development of personality through art. The first chapter focuses on the historical events in gothic in the czech lands. The second chapter deals with the actual art and refers to the inner world of artists and the rest of the population. The third chapter describes the development of art in the czech lands. It represents a large number of generated sites and gives rise to their historical context. The fourth and final chapter points to the importance of art education for children and interpretation of symbolic values.
